Deploying an OVF + VMDK on VMware vCenter 8.0 U3

This guide walks through deploying an OVF with accompanying VMDK files into VMware vCenter 8.0 U3.

Note: Replace each placeholder with the appropriate screenshot after capturing the deployment process.

Step 1 – Open vCenter

Log in to the vSphere Client.

Notes:

  • Enter your credentials.
  • Verify you are connected to the correct vCenter instance.

Step 2 – Start Deployment

Right-click the target cluster, host, or VM folder, then select Deploy OVF Template.

Notes:

  • Ensure you have sufficient permissions to deploy virtual machines.

Step 3 – Select Source

Choose Local file and browse to the .ovf file.

Ensure all referenced .vmdk files are located in the same directory as the OVF before proceeding.

Notes:

  • Missing VMDK files will cause the deployment to fail.

Step 4 – Name and Folder

Provide a name for the virtual machine and select the destination inventory folder.

Notes:

  • Use a meaningful VM name that matches your naming convention.

Step 5 – Compute Resource

Select the destination cluster or ESXi host.

Notes:

  • Ensure the selected host has sufficient CPU and memory resources.

Step 6 – Storage

Select the datastore where the VM will be deployed.

Choose one of the SSD main datastores:

  • 301
  • 401

Choose the preferred disk provisioning format.

Notes:

  • Verify there is enough available storage before proceeding.

Step 7 – Network

Verify that each virtual NIC is connected to the correct destination network.

Notes:

  • Confirm all network adapters are mapped correctly before deployment.

Step 8 – Review

Review the deployment summary and click Finish.

Notes:

  • Double-check the VM name, storage, network mappings, and deployment settings.

Step 9 – Monitor Deployment

Wait for the deployment task to complete.

or

VM → Monitor → Tasks

Notes:

  • Deployment time depends on the size of the virtual disks and datastore performance.

Step 10 – Verify the Virtual Machine

After deployment completes:

  1. Power on the VM.
  2. Verify all virtual disks are attached.
  3. Verify the network adapters are present.
  4. Confirm the operating system boots successfully.

Notes:

  • Review the VM console for any boot or hardware-related issues.

Troubleshooting

Deployment fails because VMDKs cannot be found

  • Ensure every VMDK referenced in the OVF exists.
  • Verify all files are located in the same directory before starting the deployment.

Insufficient datastore space

  • Verify adequate free space exists on the selected datastore.

Permission errors

  • Confirm your account has permission to deploy virtual machines.

Network issues

  • Verify each virtual NIC is mapped to the correct port group.

VM fails to boot

  • Confirm the firmware (BIOS/EFI) matches the source VM.
  • Verify all virtual disks are attached correctly.
  • Review the VM console for boot errors.
